Mariner Girl Scout Troop 660 recently spent two days canoeing on the Buffalo river in northcentral Arkansas. Girls attending the outing were Lara Turner, Grace Daniels, Ashlie Giffin, Allison Burke, Meredith Burke and Mariah Schwager. Adult advisers and instructors accompanying the girls were Marty and Cecelia Burke, Bruce and Mary Jo Mensie, Lawrence and Lynne Bodle, Jackie Holladay, Lucy Remple McAllister and Margaret Bodle. The low level of the river presented challenges in finding water deep enough to float in some areas. The girls learned about teamwork, maneuvering skills and “reading” the river.
The troop also is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary Aug. 4-6. There will be activities at Hidden Valley Camp and Clinton Lake. Efforts are being made to contact everyone who was in the troop. Contact advisers Jean Martin, Lynne Bodle, Marcia West or Mary Jo Mensie if you know of someone who hasn’t been contacted.
The troop began as “Ship 201” under the leadership of Lucy Remple; her mother, Mariana Remple, later became the troop adviser and served in a leadership capacity until her death in 2000. Over the years, the troop number changed to 660 and the Council changed from the Lawrence Girl Scout Council to Vallehi Council to Kaw Valley Council.
