Detroit extends Cubs' losing streak to four

? Curtis Granderson doubled, tripled and scored twice, and Nate Robertson pitched seven effective innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Robertson (7-3) allowed two runs and five hits as the AL Central-leading Tigers won for the seventh time in nine games. The Cubs lost their fourth in a row.

Todd Jones worked a perfect ninth for his 18th save.

Marcus Thames led off the second inning with his 13th home run to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Chicago’s Henry Blanco, starting at catcher while Michael Barrett’s appeal of a suspension was heard, had an RBI single in the second and hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth.

St. Louis – Jason Marquis worked eight sharp innings for a rotation that has been struggling and improved to 9-4.

New York – Erik Bedard won his first game in a month.

Athletics 7, Dodgers 3

Oakland, Calif. – Barry Zito struck out 11 in his sixth straight win, Eric Chavez hit a two-run homer and the Athletics won their eighth consecutive game.

Zito (8-3) matched his career high with his third career 11-strikeout game and first since June 1, 2002, at Tampa Bay. He allowed eight hits and three runs in eight innings and didn’t walk a batter for the third time this year.

Arlington, Texas – Kevin Millwood pitched into the eighth inning to win his fifth straight decision, helped by groundballs both offensively and defensively in Texas’ victory over Arizona.

Marlins 3, Blue Jays 1

Miami – Scott Olsen won his fourth consecutive start and Dan Uggla hit a go-ahead home run to lead Florida.

Twins 4, Pirates 2

Pittsburgh – Francisco Liriano shook off an early two-run deficit to strike out a career-best 11 for Minnesota.

Mariners 5, Giants 4

Seattle – After hitting homer No. 718, Barry Bonds struck out looking against J.J. Putz to end the Mariners’ win.

Ichiro Suzuki hit a leadoff home run for Seattle and Felix Hernandez (7-6) won his fourth straight start, despite allowing a career-high three home runs – all in the first 10 Giants batters. The Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak.

Reds Sox 4, Braves 1

Atlanta – Jon Lester earned his first major league win with six good innings and Jason Varitek hit a three-run double to lead Boston past Atlanta.

White Sox 12, Reds 4

Cincinnati – Joe Crede’s first-inning grand slam got Chicago’s high-powered offense rolling.

Devil Rays 10, Phillies 4

Philadelphia – Julio Lugo homered twice, and Damon Hollins had his first four-hit game and drove in three runs to lead Tampa Bay over struggling Philadelphia.

Padres 5, Angels 4

Anaheim, Calif. – Khalil Greene scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning on a throwing error by rookie catcher Mike Napoli, leading the Padres to the win.

Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a home run for San Diego. Alan Embree (2-0) got the last two outs of the eighth for the win, and Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.

Francisco Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss.

Yankees 7, Nationals 5

Washington – Bernie Williams hit a solo home run in the ninth to put New York ahead to stay over Washington.

The Yankees came back from deficits of 3-2 and 5-3, tying the game with two runs in the eighth, and adding two more in the ninth off Nationals closer Chad Cordero (2-2).

Brewers 6, Indians 4

Milwaukee – Chris Capuano struck out a career-high 12, and Corey Koskie and Carlos Lee homered to help Milwaukee.
