Hot and windy again

Slight chance for thunderstorm tonight, better chance Saturday

Turn on the sprinkler again today – more hot and windy weather is expected for Lawrence this afternoon, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“It will be another hot day as we make it into the 90s,” Schack said. The last time Lawrence has seen more than a quarter of an inch of rain was when it received 1.82 inches on May 29, Schack said.

However, there’s a possibility for some thunderstorms moving in on Saturday, breaking the dry spell, she said.

“We’re heading up to 93 again today,” she said. The average high temperature for this date is 85 degrees. The record high was 101 degrees, set in 1946.

Winds will be from the south 15 to 25 mph, gusting as high as 35 mph, Schack said.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 73 degrees, the humidity was 76 percent and winds were out of the southeast at 5 mph. The average low temperature for this date is 65 degrees. The record low was 49 degrees, set in 1942.

Overnight, the low temperature will drop to 72 degrees by early Saturday morning, Schack said. Saturday’s high will climb to 83 degrees, she said.

“After midnight or 1 a.m., we will have a chance for a thunderstorm,” she said.

The greatest chances for scattered thunderstorms are late Saturday morning, then in the middle of the day and again redeveloping Saturday evening, she said.

The National Weather Service puts the chance for precipitation at 30 percent for tonight, 60 percent on Saturday and 50 percent Saturday night.

Schack said Sunday morning’s temperature will begin at a low of 68 degrees, then reach a high of 82 degrees Sunday afternoon.

She said there’s another chance for thunderstorms on Sunday evening. The National Weather Service puts the precipitation chance at 50 percent Sunday, 20 percent Sunday night and 20 percent Monday.
