Berlin ? England and Ecuador vaulted into the second round of the World Cup with wins Thursday, and host Germany also advanced without even having to play.

Ecuador beat Costa Rica, 3-0, in Hamburg, a win that was enough to send both the South Americans and Germany into the knockout round. They will play for first place in Group A on Tuesday.

The hosts, who beat Poland 1-0 on Wednesday, also qualified with Ecuador’s win. Winless Costa Rica and Poland have been eliminated.

England, which used Wayne Rooney as a second-half substitute, advanced after late goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard secured a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in Group B.

In Thursday’s last game, Sweden got an 89th-minute goal from Fredrik Ljungberg to beat Paraguay, 1-0.

Crouch rose over a Trinidad defender to head in a cross by David Beckham in the 83rd minute, and Gerrard added another in injury time to give England its second straight win at the tournament.

England controlled play most of the game in Nuremberg but missed countless good chances, raising Trinidad’s hopes of a second straight 0-0 draw in its first World Cup.

“It would be fair to say that you haven’t seen the best of us yet, but we put ourselves in a good position,” Beckham said. “We know we can play better.”

Rooney, who broke his right foot April 29, came on as a substitute in the 58th minute, replacing Michael Owen.

The Manchester United striker was cleared to play earlier in the day by British doctors. He has been training with the England squad since June 5.

The winning goal unfolded when Beckham took his time and found the 6-foot-6-inch Crouch in front of the Trinidad net. Crouch leapt over Brett Sancho and headed the ball past Shaka Hislop for England’s first second-half goal in a World Cup since 1998.

“It was so much work. England got so much position on the ball,” said Trinidad striker Dwight Yorke, who used to play for Manchester United. “It was a special moment because I have so many friends, so many memories of playing in England.”

Carlos Tenorio and Agustin Delgado each scored their second goals of the tournament for Ecuador, while Ivan Kaviedes added the game’s third in injury time.

“We’re very happy for having qualified, aside from me having scored another goal for my team,” Delgado said. “We’re now thinking about being group leaders. We think about winning every game.”

Ecuador needs only a draw against Germany in its final match of the first round to claim first place in Group A. The winner would likely avoid playing England in the second round.

“Our big concern now is to play a great match against Germany, and eventually against England, if it happens,” Suarez said. “Our idea is to finish as the best team in the first round and then doing the same in the second round and continue to improve as much as possible.”

With England already qualified, the loss eliminated Paraguay. Sweden plays England and Paraguay plays Trinidad on Tuesday to decide the second qualifier.
