Old home town – 40 years ago today

The District 497 school board got state approval to exceed its 1965-66 budget by $503,985 to pay the June, July and August salaries of personnel in old District 60.

Fifty-two local boys were already getting ready for the July 4 Soap Box Derby races here, the first time they were to be conducted in the city.

Kansas University summer school began with an enrollment of 4,575.

The Lawrence Jaycees Horse Show was about to begin a four-day run. The local show had developed into one of the top such events in the state, and horses and owners came from a wide geographical area to take part.

Topeka was beginning the monumental task of cleaning up and rehabilitation after a vicious tornado claimed 16 lives and caused more than $100 million damage in the community. Fortunately, the Lawrence area had been spared significant devastation from the twister.
