Breezy and hot today

Thunderstorm chances increase for the weekend

A hot, sunny and windy afternoon is in store for Lawrence. But the dry spell may be ending this weekend, as thunderstorms chances increase Saturday through Monday, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We’re heading up to 93 degrees today,” Schack said. Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 25 to 30 mph, she said.

The average high temperature for this date is 85 degrees. The record high was 101 degrees, set in 1946.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 71 degrees, the humidity was 66 percent and winds were out of the south at 8 mph. The average low temperature for this date is 65 degrees. The record low was 49 degrees, set in 1917.

Tonight’s temperature will drop off to 72 degrees by early Friday morning. The temperatures will climb to 93 degrees on Friday afternoon.

Saturday’s morning low temperature will be 71 degrees, climbing to a high of 85 degrees Saturday afternoon, she said.

Schack said Lawrence was more than 2 inches behind for the month in rainfall. However, there’s a chance the dry spell will end this weekend, she said.

“Eventually late Friday night and Saturday we will have some thunderstorms pushing in, which will be our best chance for some much-needed rainfall,” she said.

The National Weather Service says the chance for precipitation is 50 percent Friday night, 50 percent Saturday, 40 percent Saturday night and 40 percent Sunday.
