Whitesox secure victory in the sixth

A 10-all tie in the bottom of the fifth inning – that’s the last thing the Whitesox would have expected after the Pirates scored six runs in the fourth Wednesday at Holcom Park.

However, the Whitesox rallied and pushed the tie game into the sixth inning where Ben Smith quickly put an end to things, driving in the winning run in his team’s 11-10 victory.

“I was pleased with the win,” Whitesox coach Daniel Dulin said. “They’re getting better. The mental part of their game isn’t up there yet, but they’re working on it.”

Dulin said the win was the best the Whitesox have looked in four games.

The contest seemed like it was going to be an easy victory for the Whitesox, until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Pirates scored six runs to take a 10-7 lead.

Pirates second baseman and shortstop Mitchell Morrow said he was slightly disappointed in the loss.

“We played sloppy at times. It was definitely a winnable game for us,” he said.

Ice League Whitesox pitcher Mitchell Whitson prepares to throw to the Pirates at the bottom of the fifth inning on Wednesday. The Whitesox defeaed the Pirates, 11-10, at Holcom Park.

The Whitesox took the lead immediately, ending the first up, 3-2. This continued into the second. After a series of mistakes the Pirates called a time out and switched both their pitcher and catcher, but the score still favored the Whitesox leading 7-2.

In the third, the Pirates started their comeback with two runs, then completed their big rally by plating six more in the fourth.

Whitesox first baseman Jordan Kircher tied things in the fifth with a home run, although the Pirates had an ample opportunity to win in the bottom of the inning, but left the bases loaded.

Finally Smith stepped up with the game’s biggest hit.

“I was happy with our win,” Kircher said. “We slipped up in an inning, but we played pretty well.”
