Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 14, 1906: “This is a season when too much attention cannot be paid to sanitary conditions in the city. Now through the summer months is when many cases of typhoid and other kinds of fever may be expected to develop and the first focus should be on cleaning our sewers and keeping them that way so hot weather does not allow dangers to multiply. : Mrs. James Colton is the balloonist for the agency putting on the street fair here and she says “It is like sailing on water – once you do it, you will want to do it again and again.” During a recent descension, her balloon parachute collapsed on a cow in a local field, causing the animal great distress. Some joke that the animal may be running yet.”
