Former prime minister Charles Haughey dies
Dublin ? Charles Haughey, a four-term prime minister of Ireland who had a scandal-filled career, has died. He was 80.
Flags were ordered at half-staff and a Friday state funeral was planned for Haughey, whose death followed a decade-long battle with prostate cancer.
Haughey’s political career was marked by his attempts to keep the mysterious source of his wealth a secret. A taxpayer-funded probe into his lavish lifestyle – which included horses, helicopters, an art collection, a yacht and his own island — found that he solicited more than $10 million from Ireland’s top businessmen.
The first government he led, from 1979 to 1981, nearly bankrupted the country. The second collapsed in 1982 after a murder suspect was found hiding in the home of Haughey’s attorney general.
Returning to power again in 1987, Haughey served two more terms until his own party, Fianna Fail, finally ousted him in 1992 after he was linked to the tapping of journalists’ phones.
