Raiders suffer first loss, 7-5, in title game
SPRINGFIELD, MO. ? The Lawrence Raiders jumped to a big lead in the first inning, then went scoreless the rest of the way and suffered their first setback of the American Legion baseball season, 7-5, Sunday to the host team in the championship game of the Kickapoo tournament.
The Raiders (6-1) led 5-0 in the first, but managed just one hit the rest of the day.
“We’ve got to tip our cap to the opposing pitcher,” Raiders coach Troy Wingert said. “We scored five in the first, but he kept pumping his ball in there the rest of the game, keeping us off balance. But that’s baseball.”
Travis Ice was 2-for-4, Lorenzo Ricketts was 1-for-2 with an RBI and John Novotny was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
“The good thing about baseball is, we get another chance to come out Tuesday and get back after it,” Wingert said. “It was a good learning experience, and we’re going to get back after it Tuesday.”
The Raiders will travel to Olathe South on Tuesday.
