Another Morningstar joins Jayhawks

Brady's big sister will close out volleyball career at Kansas

Brady Morningstar won’t be the only member of his family competing at Kansas University this season.

Linsey Morningstar, sister of the incoming KU freshman basketball player, has decided to transfer from Temple University and compete for the Jayhawk volleyball team her senior season.

“It’s good to be home and even better Brady is here as well. It’s an extra treat,” said Linsey, whose sister, Jamie, played volleyball at KU from 1999 to 2002 and dad, Roger, played basketball for the Jayhawks from 1973-75.

“I had a lot of fun at Temple,” noted Linsey, a setter who had 184 assists, 76 digs and 27 service aces her junior season for the Owls, who went 23-13 overall, 11-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

“I met a lot of great people. I love my teammates and coaches. I was able to go to China twice and play overseas against amazing competition,” the former Free State High standout added. “We won our regular season conference championship two of the three seasons there. I had a blast, but my time was up there. I’m very happy to be back.”

Morningstar, a scholarship player at Temple, will walk on the KU team and vie for playing time at setter where KU is expecting big things from red-shirt freshman Katie Martincich as well as junior Emily Brown.

“Linsey is a great jump server and plays good defense as well (as setting),” KU coach Ray Bechard said of Morningstar, who stands 5-feet-10. “She did a great job at Temple. After she got the release from Temple and contacted us, we felt there was the opportunity to add a player who is skilled, loves KU and will be a great teammate and compete very hard. I’m excited for her.”

Local businessman Roger Morningstar said having a third child attend KU “is obviously a dream come true for her. This is icing on the cake. To have all three put the KU uniform on is special in our hearts – Linda’s and mine,” he added of his wife.

Bechard has fond memories of coaching Jamie Morningstar, who is a recent law school graduate and now works for the Detroit Pistons.

“Jamie was awesome,” Bechard said. “They (Morningstar family members) know … they just understand what a commitment is, what it means to be a great team member, how to be a great competitor.”

Of the Morningstar legacy, Linsey said: “I guess we got lucky. We were all lucky and fortunate to have the opportunity to play at a great university like Kansas. I grew up a Jayhawk basketball fan, and followed Jamie through college. I’m looking forward to the season and helping contribute to the team.”
