Temperatures sizzling into upper 90s

Chance for thunderstorms Saturday

Fill up the ice chest, pack the sunscreen and grab the shades – it’s going to be a hot, sunny afternoon, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We’re heading up to 97 degrees for a high today. We’ll have mostly sunny skies,” Schack said. Winds will be out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph, she said.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 68 degrees, the humidity was 84 percent and winds were out of the east at 3 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 63 degrees. The record low was 40 degrees, set in 1913.

The average high temperature for this date is 84 degrees. The record high was 100 degrees, set in 1934.

Schack said tonight’s temperature will drop off to a low of 73 degrees by early Saturday morning. But the hot weather will return Saturday afternoon as the temperature climbs to 94 degrees, she said.

“If you’re outdoors tomorrow, make sure you keep the sunscreen and some water,” she said.

There is a threat of thunderstorms that starts late Saturday afternoon and lasts through Saturday night, with the strongest chance for storms rolling in on Saturday night, she said.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Kansas in a “slight risk” for severe weather on Saturday, she said. The biggest threat from the storms would be large hail and strong, straight-line winds, she said.

There is a chance for morning rain on Sunday, she said. Sunday’s morning low temperature will be 68 degrees. Sunday’s high temperature will climb to 83 degrees, with cloudy skies, she said.
