Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 9, 1906: “The oldest veteran of the Civil War and perhaps the oldest resident of Lawrence is S.A. Daniel, North Lawrence. He was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 15, 1814, and is a descendant of an Irish family that came to South Carolina when it was only a colony. Mr. Daniel is 92 and is accepted as the oldest resident of the county, but he says he has heard there is one other man who is slightly older. He does not know his name, however. : The county commissioners are in session this week sitting as a board of equalization to adjust the assessments over the county. So far, very few complaints have been made. : It is doubtful the general public realizes the great amount of work the women’s organizations of Lawrence’s churches do. They raise money, carry on one worthwhile project after another and too often get no attention and credit. They are a powerful force in our community and that needs to be recognized.”
