The honors keep pouring in for Kansas University baseball standout Don Czyz.

Already named an All-American relief pitcher, Czyz on Thursday was honored as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year.

Czyz finished the 2006 season with a 6-0 record and 1.56 earned run average. His 19 saves (in 19 chances) is best in the NCAA, and it propeled him to Thursday’s honor over Georgia’s Josh Fields, Oregon State’s Kevin Gunderson, Cal State Fullerton’s Vinnie Pestano and Rice’s Cole St. Clair.

“In my 28 years of coaching, that is the most dominant performance by a single player,” KU coach Ritch Price said.

Czyz became a closer at the end of his sophomore year, and since then compiled 30 career saves. He also has the Big 12 Conference record for career appearances with 128.

Out of eligibility, Czyz was selected in the seventh round of the amateur baseball draft this week by the Florida Marlins.
