Mock state activity began in earnest with the opening of Boys State on the Kansas University campus.

Paul Smart was named to head Robert Docking’s Democratic gubernatorial bid in Douglas County.

Craig Stevens, former Kansas University student better known as television’s Peter Gunn, was master of ceremonies for the KU Centennial Commencement dinner program. He said a great deal of his fan mail came from overseas and that he needed interpreters to read it. He had been on the KU basketball squad from 1935 to 1937 under Phog Allen and his name then had been Gail Shikles from Kansas City, Mo.

The Lawrence Jaycees’ Achievement Place for Boys was in need of funds to become operational. A money drive had been about $6,000 short of the goal.

Army Pvt. Delbert Ryan, 21, Lawrence, was listed as killed in action in Vietnam War combat.
