Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 8, 1906: “The ladies of Lawrence are beginning to realize what a great blessing natural gas is. They can now dress up as they please before meals and not have to worry about overheating over a hot stove. Just a twist of the lever and everything is in readiness. Hired help is easier to secure and retain because cleaning up is reduced to a minimum, there is nothing to blacken the walls and no coal to carry. : There is trouble about the university annual, which was taken out of town to be printed and which has seen inferior work. In the past, printing has been done here and it has been satisfactory. The fact this year’s book was printed at a country weekly newspaper in western Kansas is causing quite a stir, particularly because the work is bad. : We hear England is soon to have a baseball league and wants games with teams in this country. Great Britain always has displayed a hankering to be licked by America.”
