Nats win series in Atlanta

? Marlon Anderson hit a two-run homer, and Ramon Ortiz won his fifth straight start as the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves, 5-2, on Wednesday night.

The Nationals won two of three in the series to improve their record against the Braves this season to 4-4. Over the last 11 seasons the Nationals won the season series against the Braves once, 7-6 in 2000 when they were still the Montreal Expos.

Atlanta, which snapped a five-game losing streak Tuesday night, completed a disappointing 2-8 homestand. The Nationals completed a 6-3 road trip with six victories in their last seven games.

Marlins 8, Giants 1

San Francisco- Dontrelle Willis pitched a six-hitter, and Dan Uggla homered twice to help the Marlins.

Willis (3-6), back home in the Bay Area, struck out three and walked three to win his second straight start following a six-game losing streak. Willis recorded his 13th career complete game and second this year.

Rockies 16, Pirates 9

Denver – Yorvit Torrealba hit a grand slam and had one of Colorado’s major-league-record-tying five sacrifice flies.

Astros 1, Cubs 0

Houston – Chris Sampson tossed seven innings of three-hit ball in his first major-league start, leading the Astros.

Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 3

Phoenix – Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Sal Fasano homered, and the Phillies completed a three-game sweep.

Fasano tied a career high with four hits and fell a triple shy of a cycle.

Reds 7, Cardinals 4

St. Louis – Rich Aurilia matched career highs with four hits and five RBIs, helping the Reds pull into a tie with the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.

Padres 6, Brewers 5

Milwaukee – Adrian Gonzalez and Vinny Castilla hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to lift San Diego.

Mets 9, Dodgers 7

Los Angeles – Tom Glavine became baseball’s first nine-game winner despite a shaky 51â3 inning performance, and Carlos Beltran and David Wright each had three hits for New York.
