Warm today, with possible storms

Heaviest storms to move in around midnight

Scattered clouds are moving into Lawrence today. But the best chance for some rain won’t be until late tonight, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We could see a few strong storms develop around midnight tonight,” Schack said.

The National Weather Service says there’s a 20 percent chance for storms today and a 60 percent chance tonight.

The weather service said the storms developing tonight could be severe, bringing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rains.

Schack said today’s temperatures will climb into the 80s, reaching a high of 86 degrees. The average high temperature for this date is 83 degrees. The record high was 98 degrees, set in 1911.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 67 degrees, the humidity was 73 percent and winds were out of the southeast at 7 mph.

This morning’s low temperature was 66 degrees. The average low temperature for this date is 62 degrees. The record low was 48 degrees, set in 1897.

Overnight, temperatures will drop to 67 degrees by Tuesday morning, Schack said. Tuesday’s high will be 85 degrees, she said.

Mostly sunny skies return on Wednesday, with the low temperature starting at 64 degrees and rising to a high of 85 degrees by Wednesday afternoon, she said.
