Friends remember doctor who killed self

? Dr. Edward Van Dyk was supposed spend Sunday at a picnic for cancer survivors and their families.

The radiation oncologist had planned to welcome 400 guests.

Despite the shocking events of last weekend – Van Dyk’s suicide, after killing his two sons – the picnic is going on as planned.

“I think there will be some somber thoughts about Dr. Van Dyk, but I also think patients will remember what a good physician he was,” said Dr. Mark Woodson, who will be at the picnic.

Officials hope to keep it as a celebration of surviving cancer, but they plan to have a moment of silence to remember Van Dyk.

The picnic is scheduled to end 30 minutes before the memorial visitation for Van Dyk, 43, and his two sons, Carl, 8, and Spencer, 4, begins.

On May 27, Van Dyk threw the boys off a 15th-story balcony at a Miami Beach hotel before jumping from the balcony, police said.

The unexplained tragedy continues to stun those who know the Van Dyk family, who were in Florida to celebrate the 10th wedding anniversary of Edward and his wife, Qinuo.

On that morning, Qinuo said her husband wanted to take a shower, but she wanted to use the bathroom first, police said.

When she stepped out of the bathroom, she heard one of the children scream and saw her husband jump from the balcony, police said. When she looked down, she saw their bodies.
