Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 1, 1906: This afternoon marked the close of the public schools for 1905-06. In every room there were decorations and good programs had been prepared. Every boy and girl was resplendent in his or her best clothes and there were many admiring mothers and other relatives present. There are about 2,500 children in the grade schools in Lawrence and of this number 87 will probably enter the high school next fall. The past year has been a successful one. … Another local thief remains uncaught after the O.A. Hausome house was broken into yesterday while the family was attending a circus parade. We have far too many unsolved crimes here and far more vigilance is needed. … Miss Crawley, who has been in charge of the New Eldridge Hotel operating it for the lessee, has become the lessee herself and took charge under the new arrangement yesterday. … The monthly weather report from Dr. F.H. Snow of the university says the past May was the driest on record. The May rainfall fell below an inch for the first time in 39 years.
