Ex-Jayhawk Shareef killed in car accident

Former Kansas University basketball player Danielle Shareef was killed in an automobile accident Friday in Tampa, Fla.

Services for Shareef, 36, will be Friday. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until noon, with the funeral starting after, at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Home, 9100 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Mo.

Originally from Riviera Beach, Fla., Shareef started 84 of 119 games from 1989-92. She averaged 7.3 points and 4.9 rebounds for her career.

An academic all-Big Eight Conference selection, Shareef was a member of KU’s 1992 Big Eight championship team her senior season.

Shareef played professional basketball in the U.S. and Israel. She received her undergraduate degree from KU in communications and a master’s degree from the University of New Orleans in school counseling. Shareef was completing her PhD at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

“This is a tragedy. Danielle was one of the sweetest and a very gentle person,” former KU women’s basketball coach Marian Washington said. “Danielle was extremely competitive and loved the game of basketball,” Washington added. “We are going to miss her. Her teammates and other members of the Jayhawk family remain very close. This has been a real tragedy for all of us.”
