From the Lawrence Daily World for July 30, 1906: “The schools in Douglas County are hiring teachers more promptly and paying them a little better wages and most of the schools have all their teachers signed. So far, at least 50 of the 86 districts report their teaching staffs are full and there are sure to be others that have not reported. : The past week has seen Frank Endacott and his assistants transforming his block in West Lawrence from a wilderness of weeds and underbrush into one of the most attractive blocks in the city. Neighbors are highly appreciative and Endacott says he plans even more beautification. Many are helping in the work, including placing flower beds in key positions. Many are taking walking tours to see the garden spot. : The state has lowered its tax one mill due to increased valuation and this will benefit Douglas County taxpayers something like $5,000. Statewide, the figure will be more than $300,000. : Officials say rural mail boxes can be home-made but must pass inspection and be approved by postal authorities.”
