Many Lawrence residents got up extremely early (or stayed up awfully late) to watch the televised and heavily publicized wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in London. The ceremony was considered a fairy-tale event that would see Charles eventually ascending the throne of England with Lady Di as his queen.
The J.C. Penney Co. still wanted to build a store here but it was sticking with its plan for a climate-controlled mall rather than a free-standing store favored by some, according to a letter from Penney officials to City Manager Buford Watson. Some insisted free-standing stores would be preferable to a mall layout but the “majors” in the retailing field said they were not inclined to take that route, preferring the anchor roles in mall settings.
