Bombing convicts to file appeals from death row
Jakarta, Indonesia ? Three men facing execution for their roles in the 2002 bombings on the resort island of Bali will file appeals, arguing that the anti-terror law used to convict them was applied retroactively, their attorney said Friday.
The defendants will seek a new trial at a venue off Bali if the Supreme Court approves the appeals, according to Muhammad Mahendradata, who said they hoped proceedings would be more fair elsewhere.
The three – Imam Samudra, Ali Gufron and Amrozi Nurhasyim – were among 30 people convicted in the nightclub blasts that killed 202 people, many of them young Australian tourists.
They are alleged members of the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror group, blamed for a string of attacks in Indonesia, including 2005 bombings on Bali that left 20 people dead.
