Spending 20 to 80 minutes with each candidate, the Lawrence school board interviewed the six people who had applied to replace Bob Davis, who resigned to move to Liberty, Mo. Later, the board was to vote on the selection, due to serve two years rather than the four years for which Davis had recently been elected. The candidates were Leonard Clark, Jim Dwyer, Norman Gates, Daniel Hayes, Don McDow and Ron Schmidt. Julie Hack was board president and Roger Pine was vice president.

The total mill levy for the various governing agencies from the state on down was due to run about 123.5, depending on late valuation figures. It would be about a 6 percent boost from the levy for the current year.

Recent storms had created so much crop damage and loss in Douglas County that officials were considering applying for federal aid for the hard-hit farmers here.
