Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 28, 1906: “Topeka is now having prize fights regularly. Topeka has become a great moral center, it seems. : Boston now has two tail-ender baseball teams, proving it does not know beans about baseball. : Girls here are fortunate in that they do not have to quit their jobs when they are married, as is the case in many cities in the area. They can be clerks, stenographers and school teachers and we have many more such young women than places such as Topeka. : ‘Pappy’ Johnson’s joint on Pennsylvania was raided by the police last night and they got two barrels of beer, one of which had just been opened, and 191 bottles of whiskey. Johnson and Nash Porter made their escape last night but Johnson was arrested this morning. Porter is still at large. Jointists have been having a difficult time here of late and that is good for the town. “
