Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 26, 1906: “The new post office has no chairs in the lobby and that means some people accustomed to loafing there will have to make other plans. In the winter, many loafers came in to escape the cold. The new building with its tiled floor is a little too metropolitan for the average loafer. : Marshal Kincaid found a number of empty silk and hosiery boxes in North Lawrence today, apparently discarded by someone who robbed a box car en route to El Paso, Texas. No arrests seem likely since the perpetrator(s) has fled. : John Tarpy, iron works foreman whose left eye was injured July 4 with a burning spark of iron went to Kansas City this morning to have the eye removed. Recovery seemed likely until a major infection hit last night.”
