Outlaws eliminated from zone tourney

Lawrence Outlaws baseball players began to put away their gear Friday.

While the Lawrence Raiders were still playing for a berth in the Class AAA State American Legion tournament at Free State High’s field, the Outlaws’ season ended in their zone tournament Thursday night in Emporia.

The Outlaws opened with an 11-4 win over the Blue Valley Tigers on Wednesday night, then dropped a 14-4 run-rule decision to host Emporia later that night.

On Thursday, the Outlaws came back in the losers bracket to face the same Blue Valley team they had ousted 24 hours earlier. The Outlaws led, 10-6, going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Tigers rallied for an 11-10 walk-off victory in the double-elimination qualifier for next week’s State Legion Tournament in Salina.

The Outlaws, composed of 13 players from Lawrence High and one from Free State High, finished with a 16-21 record.

“We started slow,” coach Chris Johnson said, “but we began to hit a little better, pitch a little better and field a little better. Overall, we improved, and that was our goal.”
