Vinland Valley 4-H Club members gathered June 24 at the Vinland School, where they met before going on a tour of members’ homes to see their projects. Members who showed projects were: Bryce Mock; Dalton and Lacey Vesecky; Spencer Wilson; Amanda Miller; Casey and Brittnay George; Lacey Hunsinger; Connor, Parris and Braxton Nottingham; Annabelle Roche; Bradley, Sara and Blake Shields; and Misty and Melissa Emory.

During the tour, the club stopped to have lunch and a meeting, which was called to order by Casey George, junior president. The club voted to buy an animal at the Douglas County Free Fair’s livestock auction. Members also discussed the fair.

After the tour, the group planned to swim at the Baldwin City pool, but a thunderstorm canceled the plans until their next meeting, which will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at the pool.

The Four Leaf Clover 4-H Club met July 10 in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Jessica Gibler presided during the meeting. Roll call was “I would not want 100 …….”. Members were reminded that the Kansas Youth Leadership Conference will be Aug. 1.

The club will donate two cakes for the centennial celebration at the Douglas County Free Fair. It also will enter the scarecrow competition at the fair. Henry Mitchell gave a bicycle presentation. Members enrolled in the horse project gave a presentation, and members enrolled in the rabbit project gave a talk. Louis Hamel led a game called “Do You Love Your Neighbor?”.

The club will have a mini-fair at 1 p.m. Sunday in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Mark Jehle presided during the June 24 meeting of the Pioneer 4-H Club. Members answered roll call by naming their favorite professional game and athlete.

Larry Wilson announced that there would be a scarecrow competition at the Douglas County Free Fair. The club decided to build a scarecrow for the contest.

Members were reminded of the following dates: dairy judging, July 17; horse judging, today at Topeka Expo Center; birthday cake contest, Aug. 5, Building 21 at fairgrounds; state fair entry deadline, July 15; state fair entry for horses, Aug. 1.

Members voted to help walk dogs at the Lawrence Humane Society on July 16.

Stacey Rudman gave a project talk on taking care of cats. Clayton Wintermantel gave a demonstration on how to make a box without using any supplies other than paper.
