Toronto – Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui could be days away from taking batting practice after getting a positive report about his broken left wrist Thursday.
Luis Gonzalez miffed
Phoenix – Arizona manager Bob Melvin told Luis Gonzalez he was going to start rookie Carlos Quentin in left field Thursday night to give him a night off against a tough left-hander. Gonzalez took it a different way. The 16-year veteran interpreted his benching as a sign the organization may be ready to part company with him at year’s end.
Nationals shelve Guillen
Washington – The Washington Nationals placed right fielder Jose Guillen on the 15-day disabled list due to a sore right elbow.
Wakefield has broken rib
Boston – Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield has a broken rib and is expected to spend at least three weeks on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona said Thursday.
White Sox release Politte
Detroit – The Chicago White Sox released right-handed pitcher Cliff Politte. Politte lost his spot in the bullpen when Chicago recalled right-hander Sean Tracey from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.
