Saddam hunger strike hits two-week mark

? Coffee and water.

That’s been Saddam Hussein’s diet since his last real meal July 7, a U.S. military spokesman said.

The 69-year-old ex-president on trial for crimes against humanity is refusing food despite advice of doctors, Lt. Col. Keir-Kevin Curry said.

His chief attorney, Khalil al-Dulaimi, says he’s on a hunger strike, demanding better security for his lawyers after one was killed last month.

Three defense lawyers have been killed since the trial began Oct. 19.

Curry said Saddam and three others refusing food are in good health even though they haven’t eaten for two weeks.

“They are examined daily by health professionals who advise them of the dangers of not eating,” Curry said.

The trial of Saddam and seven others in the deaths of Shiite Muslims following an assassination attempt on Saddam in 1982 is scheduled to continue Monday.
