Bonds homers; S.F. rolls
San Francisco ? Barry Bonds hit his 722nd career home run hours after the federal grand jury considering possible perjury and tax-evasion charges against him expired without an indictment, and the Giants beat the Padres, 9-3, Thursday.
Bonds’ two-run shot started a string of three straight homers by the Giants off reliever Brian Sweeney in the eighth inning. Ray Durham hit the next pitch for his 16th homer, then Pedro Feliz followed with another – the first time since Aug. 3, 2004, against Cincinnati, that the Giants hit three consecutive homers.
Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 2
Phoenix – Carlos Quentin homered in his major-league debut, and Brandon Webb pitched eight strong innings for his third straight victory as Arizona beat Los Angeles. Quentin, promoted from Triple-A Tucson earlier Thursday, hit a two-run home run off Mark Hendrickson in his third at-bat.
Mets 4, Reds 2, 10 innings
Cincinnati – Endy Chavez’s tiebreaking double in the 10th inning sent New York over Cincinnati. Cliff Floyd and Carlos Delgado hit solo homers off an otherwise-tough Bronson Arroyo, helping the Mets take two of three in the series.
Cubs 4, Astros 1
Chicago- Carlos Zambrano won his seventh straight decision, and Michael Barrett and Aramis Ramirez hit back-to-back homers for Chicago. Zambrano (10-3) gave up one run and two hits in eight innings.
Pirates 5, Marlins 3
Miami – Jeromy Burnitz’s single through a drawn-in infield drove in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning, and Pittsburgh rallied past the Marlins.
