Protesters accost car carrying election winner

? Tensions over Mexico’s disputed presidential results rose Tuesday as protesters screamed obscenities and kicked a vehicle carrying the apparent winner, Felipe Calderon, who was whisked away unharmed by his security detail.

The incident occurred as leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador prepares to announce civil resistance measures designed to help compel a recount of the more than 41 million ballots cast in the July 2 election, which he lost by about 244,000 votes.

In a radio interview, he declined to condemn the actions of his supporters, saying instead, “I do condemn the electoral fraud.

“I’m not in favor of these actions, but the offense of stepping on the will of the people is even greater,” he said.

The small group of demonstrators yelled at Calderon as he left a downtown meeting with union leaders. “Vote by vote, polling station by polling station,” they shouted. The slogan is one adopted by Lopez Obrador’s Party of the Democratic Revolution in its court challenge, which essentially calls for annulling the election.

Supporters of Calderon, of the governing National Action Party, countered with their own chant: “Vote for vote, Felipe is headed for the presidential seat.”
