Buses to give free rides Thursday

July 18, 2006

The T, the city-operated public transit system, will be offering free rides on all its buses Thursday as part of a promotion tied to the annual Downtown Lawrence Sidewalk Sale.

Public transit leaders are waiving all fares for the T throughout the day on Thursday to encourage people to use the bus system to travel downtown for the shopping extravaganza. The buses will run from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For a complete list of routes and schedules, visit or call 312-7054.

Ah, well, so much for the humane treatement of citizens. I thought they were just being nice because of the heat. But it's only a marketing ploy to get more people to shop.

I'm disillusioned.

Marion is partly right. The "'free ride' thing" as he calls it with his unique erudition is indeed about numbers. It comes from a marketing concept known as product sampling. If people try a product or service at no or lowered cost, they may find they like it enough to pay for it. Ben & Jerry's did it with their "POPCDBZWE" promotion and white sales. Heck, you find this sort of sampling every day at the grocer's.

I wonder what the effect on car traffic would be if you had to have exactly 50 cents in change every time you wanted to go for a drive.

It will likely cost $3.00 - $5.00 to drive.
