Gene Budig, the new Kansas University chancellor, was in his third week of traveling throughout Kansas to get acquainted with alumni and friends of KU. He had come from West Virginia, and his family had finally arrived and was getting settled in at the chancellor’s residence. However, the 41-year-old Budig had been home only rarely since coming to Lawrence because of his commitment to getting “out and about” the state.
