Pierzynski’s fine reduced

New York – Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski said Friday that his fine for inciting the crowd after a brawl in a game against the Cubs was reduced to $250 after his appeal. Pierzynski was originally fined $2,000 for his role in the brawl in the White Sox’s 7-0 victory May 20.

D’backs reward Melvin with two-year extension

Phoenix – Bob Melvin was Arizona’s second choice to manage the Diamondbacks two years ago.

But if he serves out his new two-year contract extension, he will be the longest-tenured manager in team history, surpassing Bob Brenly, who led Arizona to the 2001 World Series title in a 31â2-year stint at the helm.

Rios out 10 more days

Toronto – Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Alex Rios will miss at least another 10 days because of an infection in his lower left leg, the team said Friday. Rios hasn’t played since fouling a ball off his leg June 27.

Orioles demote Cabrera

Baltimore – The Baltimore Orioles optioned struggling right-hander Daniel Cabrera to Triple-A Ottawa on Friday. The 25-year-old Cabrera (4-7, 5.25 ERA) leads the majors with 75 walks and 13 wild pitches.
