Showtime’s ‘Brotherhood’ on network

Summer doldrums always have inspired programming experiments. Some figure that, because nobody’s watching anyway, let’s try something really different. Others simply go for the lowest common denominator. Both schools of thought are on display tonight.

NBC airs two hours of “Saturday Night’s Main Event” (7 p.m., NBC), featuring WWE talent including John Cena and other athlete/entertainers.

CBS will rebroadcast the debut episode of Showtime’s “Brotherhood” (9 p.m., CBS). Both CBS and Showtime are owned by Viacom. Set in a crumbling Irish neighborhood in Providence, R.I., “Brotherhood” stars Jason Isaacs as a hard-nosed local legislator whose life is complicated by the return of his brother (Jason Clarke), a professional killer.

A handsome production filled with fine performances, “Brotherhood” is a curiously humorless affair that assiduously avoids references to contemporary mores and culture. It carries the air of prestige about it, but also the burden of self-importance.
