Their tempers wearing thin after nearly three hours of debate, city commissioners narrowly rescinded a building permit and halted indefinitely the construction of a 20-unit apartment complex in the Bluffs area near Sixth and Iowa streets. The commission had approved a site plan for building twin apartment buildings in May and a building permit was issued. But three commissioners – Mayor Marci Francisco, Tom Gleason and Nancy Shontz – later joined to go against the permit.

Work was under way to rebuild a Villages Inc. foster home that had been badly damaged by fire. None of the 11 girls and their two foster parents had been hurt in the early-morning blaze at 2911 Mo. and they said smoke detectors had prevented injury or death.

The Lawrence Memorial Hospital trustees threw their support behind a move to locate a Douglas County Ambulance Service station on hospital grounds in addition to the station at 19th and Massachusetts streets.
