From the Lawrence Daily World for July 14, 1906: “There is talk that Lawrence and Lawrence people are helping local fishermen break the law by assisting them in seeking redress after their nets were seized by the state. The issue is livelihood for the fishermen and help is justified. : The committee which handled the Lawrence end of the San Francisco earthquake relief fund shows that a total of $3,536.95 was collected here and sent for relief. Many were generous. : It appears a genuine war is shaping up with Guatemala and Salvador troops. A Nicaraguan general was killed in a battle with Salvador and events seem to be heating up. : Five local joints were raided the past two days and a wagon load of booze and fixtures were seized. Aunt Jane Williams, Garfield Allen and Jessie White were arrested. Apparently this is the start of a crackdown on joints and more raids are coming. The ‘wet goods’ will be kept until trials and then dumped.”
