Outlaws sweep O-South

The Lawrence Outlaws found quite the pot of gold at the end of the numerous rainbows that could be seen from Ice Field on Tuesday.

The Outlaws’ offense exploded in sweeping a youth baseball doubleheader against Olathe South, 9-1 and 18-10. Both games ended after five innings because of the run rule.

“We came out hitting the ball, and I was pretty pleased with the way our bats went and the way we swung it,” Outlaws coach Chris Johnson said. “It’s a good thing our bats are coming alive at the end of the season because we are going to need them in the regional.”

Though Olathe South added to its own misery with three errors in each game, the Outlaws managed their 27 runs off 24 hits.

“We had a couple of games last weekend where we scored, like, two runs, so it’s just great to come out and be able to do something like that – to put it on a team like that,” said Sam Anderson, who was a combined 4-for-5 with six runs scored.

Despite giving up only one run in the first game, Outlaws starter Preston Scheibler was constantly in harm’s way after issuing six walks.

“I didn’t have a lot of control really, but had a lot of help on defense and was still able to come away with the win,” Scheibler said.

In game two, Joe Muiller battled the rejuvenated Falcons early, giving up four runs in the first inning. However, the Outlaws came back with seven runs of their own in the bottom half and gave a little confidence to their starter.

O-South responded late in the second game, scoring four runs in the fourth and making it a three-run game heading into the home half of the inning.

Scheibler threw a two-hitter and the Outlaws won the game 9-1 after it was called on a run rule in the middle of the fifth inning. R

But the Outlaws quickly plated five runs – all with two outs – to push it to an eight-run lead.

Needing three outs to envoke the second run-rule of the night, Johnson turned to Matt Avila, who retired O-South in order – with Muiller catching the final out playing right field.

Though the games were shortened, they still took a toll on the players. And seeing Avila on the mound lifted the Outlaws’ spirits for one last inning.

“I tell you what, whenever that guy comes into the game, I’m, like, ‘Thank you,'” Anderson said. “Because I know he’s going to work fast, I know he’s going to throw strikes, and he just went out there and did his job. It was great, because those were some long innings out there, and I’m just glad to see it end.”
