From the Lawrence Daily World for July 12, 1906: “Charles Apitz, 70, an early settler here, died this morning at the Central Hotel due to rheumatism and old age. He came over from Germany, served in the Union army and was imprisoned in Libby prison for 18 months. : The Bates house boat which was taken around the dam yesterday afternoon was damaged so that the planned trip to St. Louis had to be given up here. The party returned to Topeka this morning. : A motorbus with 34 passengers was overturned in Great Britain today and eight were killed. : The school of medicine at Kansas University has received application for admission from a student in Alexandria, Egypt, whose preliminary training was at the University of Beirut, Syria. Ahmed Bey Kualid is the name of the student due here in September. : Hostilities between Salvador and Guatemala have broken out anew on the border where peace was supposed to prevail after recent negotiations.”
