Bilingual requests puzzle job candidate
Q: I am struggling in a job search with employers who fail to mention that they want candidates who are bilingual. I would never apply for a job that lists being bilingual, but I can’t tell you how many times it has happened that 45 minutes or more into the interview they ask, “You’re bilingual, right?” What’s the correct protocol? I want to reach across the table and scream, “Are you kidding me?” There is no mention of a second language on my resume, so I have come to the conclusion that they are not really reviewing my resume. – Tamara
Kate: Part of the job-search process is finding out what happens in the real world and using that as your starting point. Now you know: They only glance at your resume. Speaking as an employer, when we post for a job, we get hundreds of responses. We have someone scan them as fast as possible with the goal of coming up with 10 people to call in for interviews. Then the hiring manager is given the paperwork just before the person walks in the door.
Dale: If you wanted to, Tamara, you could prescreen employers when they phone to set up the interview. On the other hand, every chance to meet with employers is precious. I’d press ahead, and when they get to “You’re bilingual, right?” you can zig or zag, depending on how the first 45 minutes have gone. Obviously the second language is an important skill in your area, and maybe you should say, “It’s a goal of mine, and I’m taking classes.” Or, you can say “No” then ask, “But is there some way we can still make it work?” If it’s truly a deal-killer, then you could ask, “In that case, are there any another jobs we could talk about?” Remember, you are in the offices of a company that is hiring, with a chance to network with other hiring managers. Rather than blow this connection by screening yourself out or fuming at their incompetence, you can choose to be pleased that their oversight has given you a chance to get inside and learn about the company. Instead of wanting to scream, just smile to yourself and think, “They must really need some help around here,” and start to figure out if you want to be that help.
