Volunteers sought to help explain Medicare

Douglas County Senior Services is looking for volunteers interested in helping seniors deal with Medicare and Medicare Part D.

“We’re really going to need people when Medicare Part D enrollment opens up again in November,” said Katie Glendening, a community services assistant.

Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas will stage a three-day training session for volunteers Aug. 8-10 in Topeka.

Upon completing the sessions, Lawrence-area volunteers may answer calls to a SHICK helpline – 800-860-5260 – on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers do not have to be seniors.

“The helpline is answered in Wichita four days a week,” Glendening said. “We answer it one day a week.”

People interested in volunteering are asked to call Glendening by Aug. 1, 842-0543.
