Punchless Yankees get by with single run in fourth

? Jaret Wright matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed four hits in six sharp innings Friday night, leading the New York Yankees to a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Bernie Williams drove in the only run with a fourth-inning single off Jae Seo (0-2), who was nearly as good as Wright in his second start for Tampa Bay since being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cleveland – Travis Hafner became the first player in major league history to hit five grand slams before the All-Star break, backing C.C. Sabathia’s fourth career shutout.

Arlington, Texas – Michael Young and Gary Matthews Jr. homered, sending Texas to a victory over Minnesota.

Red Sox 7, White Sox 2

Chicago – David Ortiz became the first player in Red Sox history to hit 30 homers before the All-Star break and rookie Jon Lester won his fourth straight decision as Boston beat Chicago.

Tigers 6, Mariners 1

Seattle – Jeremy Bonderman came within one out of a shutout and Craig Monroe hit a long homer.

Angels 3, Athletics 0

Oakland, Calif. – John Lackey retired 27 straight batters after allowing a leadoff double, winning his third straight start by pitching Los Angeles to victory over Oakland.

Lackey (7-5) matched his career high with 10 strikeouts and threw a one-hitter to outpitch All-Star Barry Zito.

Robb Quinlan hit a two-run homer and Chone Figgins added a solo shot for the Angels.

Washington – Adrian Gonzalez had three hits, including a home run, for San Diego.

Pirates 3, Phillies 2

Philadelphia – Ian Snell allowed three hits over seven innings and Pittsburgh snapped a three-game losing streak.

Marlins 7, Mets 3

New York – Dontrelle Willis hit a grand slam and pitched effectively into the eighth inning for Florida.

Willis’ fourth career homer, and first this season, highlighted Florida’s six-run fourth.

Reds 10, Braves 5

Atlanta – Cincinnati put a decisive end to its six-game losing streak, scoring eight runs in the second inning.

The 10 hits in an inning were the most in 17 years for the Reds.

Cubs 7, Brewers 2

Milwaukee – Chicago’s Carlos Zambrano allowed one run over six innings to win his fifth straight decision.

Zambrano (8-3) struck out six to increase his National League-leading total to 124. The right-hander gave up five hits and walked three.

Cardinals 8, Astros 2

Houston – Jason Marquis earned his 11th win to tie for the National League lead and pinch-hitter John Rodriguez homered for St. Louis.

Dodgers 9, Giants 7

Los Angeles – Nomar Garciaparra’s tie-breaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. Barry Bonds gave the Giants a 5-4 lead in the third inning with a three-run homer, the 720th of his career and his first since June 24.
