Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, had a mini-high adventure June 21-25 by taking a trip to Devil’s Den State Park in Arkansas. Sixteen Scouts and nine adult leaders were divided into two crews and camped for three days in the park.

On the first day, they hiked Devil’s Den trail and explored Devils Den cave, a narrow limestone cave with public access that extends more than 100 feet into the hillside. Then they visited Crevice Cave, an open crevice, and Devil’s Ice Box, which has very cold air flowing out of it.

The second day they swam and canoed at the park’s lake, which had been built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression.

On Saturday, they went on a 10-mile hike along the Butterfield Stagecoach Line. All the water sources on the trail had dried up because of the near-drought conditions, and the hike actually turned out to be 14 miles in high heat and humidity. However, working as a team and sharing water supplies, all the hikers successfully completed the course.

Crew chiefs were Adam Wangler and Jeffrey Ahle. Other Scouts participating were Billy Barnes, Keil Eggers, Jack Hearnen, Harrison Helmick, Hunter Peirce, Michael Tamerius, Daniel Clausing, Trevor Leslie, Chase Low, Lucas Vogelsang, Randy Walter, Kennan Wycoff, Kane Eggers and Luke Peirce.

They were accompanied by adult leaders Chris Armstrong, Ken Peirce, Glen Tamerius, Teri Helmick, Kirk Low, Steve Vogelsang, Steve Walter, Keith Wood and Jackie Counts.
