From the Lawrence Daily World for July 8, 1906: “The Emporia Gazette’s William Allen White has joined with us in coming out squarely in favor of the strong Republican platform proposed by W.R. Stubbs. The platform amounts to a stern code of ethics for candidates and focuses on vital issues that need to be addressed. There have been rumors that some would ‘bolt’ the Republican Party but there is little early evidence of that. White says defeat is likely, however, if candidates do not measure up. : Mayor Rose of Kansas City says he will not pay a $10,000 fine imposed on him for poor performance in office and will not vacate his office as he has been ordered to do. He has been in trouble for his alleged toleration of so many illegal joints in the city. : Spirited bidding is expected by treasury officials for bond No. 1 of the issue of $30 million for construction of the Panama Canal. Secretary Taft conferred with President Roosevelt today about the canal and Philippine matters, both of which are quite important.”
