¢ Sarah Bryant, Lawrence, has been elected to membership in the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, as an undergraduate student through the Delta Chapter at the Kansas University School of Nursing. The honor society works to foster, develop and connect nurse scholars and leaders worldwide to improve health care. Bryant received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from KU in May. She is the daughter of Johannah and Gary Bryant, Lawrence.

¢ Sam Goodell, Lawrence, received the Education Development Scholarship from the College of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Goodell, a 2005 Lawrence High School graduate, is the son of Karen and Lynn Goodell. He is a sophomore majoring in music education. Goodell is a pianist and member of MU’s University Singers.

¢John Rake, Baldwin, and Clark Boatright, Stephanie Jian and Daphne Phillips, all of Lawrence, attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy in June at Washburn University. Participants were selected to attend the academy based on their leadership potential. They were sponsored by Rotary clubs.

¢ Brandon Nightingale, a 2003 graduate of Lawrence High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in visual journalism from the Brooks Institute of Photography in June.

¢ Joel Beard, Lawrence, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in May from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn.

¢ Johnson County Community College has announced area students who made the 2006 spring semester honor roll.

¢ Erin Schelar and Chandra Shenoy, both of Lawrence, received undergraduate degrees in May from Washington University in St. Louis.

Schelar graduated with college honors with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. She was recognized as the recipient of the Award of Excellence in anthropology. The 2002 Free State High School graduate is the daughter of Judy and Bill Schelar, Lawrence.

Shenoy graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. The 2002 FSHS graduate is the daughter of Catherine and Prakash Shenoy, Lawrence.

¢ Kalem Kopf, Leslie Rhoton and Alex Rock, all of Lawrence, were initiated as 2006-2007 members of Lambda Sigma, a national sophomore honor society based on scholarship, leadership and service. They are members of the Tau chapter at Kansas University.

¢ Bryan Spangler, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the spring 2006 semester at Virginia Tech University by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average. Spangler is a junior majoring in computer science.

¢ Molly Bunch, Lawrence, has been selected as one of 80 outstanding high school seniors to join the Honors College Fellows at the University of Arkansas. To qualify for an interview, students must score at least a 32 on the ACT exam and have a 3.8 grade-point average. To be selected, students complete an application and interview process.

¢ Kelsey Randall, Lawrence, was named to the spring 2006 dean’s list at Taylor University, Upland, Ind., by earning at least a 3.6 grade-point average. Randall is a sophomore majoring in health and physical education. She is the daughter of Bob and Libby Randall, Lawrence.

¢ Kaela Byers, Lawrence, was one of four spring 2006 Kansas University graduates to receive a national award for political advocacy.

Influencing State Policy rewarded Byers; Lisa Crook, Leawood; Lisbeth Sojourner, Overland Park; and Christopher Veeh, Colby, for their advocacy in the passage of juvenile justice legislation in Kansas this year. They will share the annual $1,000 undergraduate award with two groups of social work students from other universities.

The students were tracking legislation that would reduce racial biases in the juvenile justice system and provide grants to exemplary county juvenile justice programs.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed the bill into law May 4.

Byers is the daughter of Jim Weaver and Pat Weaver and is a Lawrence High School graduate. She will enter graduate school in social work at the University of Maryland in July.

¢Lauren Gantz, Lecompton, has received the J. Philip and Kathleen Emily Tice Essay Award from Ohio University for best critical essay. Gantz is pursuing a Master of Arts degree in English literature from Ohio University. She is the daughter of Fred and Sandy Gantz, Lecompton, and the granddaughter of Jack and Bobbi Oglesby, Lawrence, and Jean Gantz, Grantville, and the late George Gantz.

¢ Kat Bolt-Goeke and Timothy Hodges, both of Lawrence, and John Deterding, Wellsville, recently participated in the 2006 Kansas Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities at Washburn University. Participants focus on the development of leadership skills in addition to the exploration of career options and the enhancement of independence through community resources, networking and empowerment. The forum also is designed to assist students in identifying guidance on developing plans to deal effectively with such challenges.

¢ Two Lawrence High School students received honors at National History Day at the University of Maryland. The theme was “Taking a Stand in History: People, Idea, Events.” The national competition was June 11-15.

Timmia Hearn-Feldman received first place in the Senior Individual Performances category with the entry “‘I Have the Heart and Stomach of a King’ Queen Elizabeth I: Taking a Stand in a Man’s World.” Hearn-Feldman received a $100 Kansas Heritage Center scholarship.

Samuel Huneke was the 2006 Jamestown Award Winner in the Senior Individual Documentary category for his entry “The Vote that Saved the Country: Edmund Ross’ Stand for Democracy.” He received a $125 Lawrence-Kaw Valley Corral of Westerners scholarship.

¢ Catherine Brann, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the spring 2006 semester at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average.

¢ Scott Konzem, Lawrence, a senior political science major at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., has been selected for membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society. The Carleton Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society was established in 1913 and elects its membership from students who rank in the highest 15 percent of their graduating class and meet other prescribed criteria. Konzem is the son of Patricia Bender and Richard Konzem, of Lawrence.
