Ortiz belts two in Sox victory

? David Ortiz hit his AL-leading 28th and 29th home runs, the latter a ninth-inning grand slam that broke open a close game and helped the Boston Red Sox avoid a four-game sweep by Tampa Bay with a 12-5 victory over the Devil Rays on Thursday night.

Ortiz, who drove in six runs, has six homers in his last six games. The grand slam off Shawn Camp was his second of the season and sixth of his career. It was his first anywhere except Fenway Park.

Manny Ramirez and Doug Mirabelli also went deep for the Red Sox, who led 6-5 before loading the bases with no outs in the ninth on two singles and a walk. Ortiz drilled the first pitch over the wall left-center for a career-best 82 RBIs before the All-Star break.

Tim Wakefield (7-8) allowed four runs and four hits in five-plus innings to improve to 15-2 lifetime against the Devil Rays, including 7-0 at Tropicana Field. The knuckleballer yielded home runs to Aubrey Huff, Carl Crawford and Jorge Cantu before turning over a two-run lead to the bullpen in the sixth.

Huff’s RBI single trimmed Boston’s lead to 6-5 in the seventh. Mike Timlin pitched a perfect eighth and Jonathan Papelbon finished up for the Red Sox, who also scored in the ninth on Mirabelli’s RBI grounder and an RBI double by Alex Gonzalez.

Ortiz, Ramirez and Mirabelli homered off Tampa Bay starter James Shields (4-2), helping the Red Sox build a 5-2 lead. Mirabelli singled and scored when Gonzalez tripled off reliever Edwin Jackson to make it 6-2 in the sixth.

Athletics 7, Angels 5

Oakland, Calif. – Frank Thomas hit a walkoff two-run homer for the seventh home run of the game, snapping Los Angeles’ season-best five-game winning streak. The Big Hurt sent a 3-0 pitch from Scot Shields (4-6) over the wall in left-center for his 19th home run. Thomas’ two RBIs gave him 1,509 for his career, tying him with Mickey Mantle for 43rd place on the all-time list.

White Sox 11, Orioles 8

Chicago – Jim Thome hit two homers and matched his career high with six RBIs to lead Chicago over Baltimore. Thome hit a grand slam in the third inning and a two-run shot in the fifth and is tied with David Ortiz for the American League lead with 29 homers.

Yankees 10, Indians 4

Cleveland – Jason Giambi and Derek Jeter both drove in three runs, and Randy Johnson, ejected in the seventh inning the last time he faced Cleveland, stuck around until the eighth. Johnson (10-7), who dominated early, allowed three runs and seven hits in 72â3 innings. The five-time Cy Young Award winner picked up his 273rd career win, moving him into a tie for 30th place with Red Ruffing.
