Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 7, 1906: “W.R. Stubbs today released a list of questions he feels Republican candidates should answer before running for office. It amounts to a pledge for the right action in the best interests of the people. : The first illustrated lecture in connection with a local band concert will be given tonight by Prof. W.C. Stevens on ‘Plant Life.” This is the first of a series of talks which university professor and other lecturers will give at South Park this summer in connection with the popular concerts. : The state of Kansas is still trying to collect $11,000 from T.T. Kelly, the state treasurer, who is being charged with being short on the purchase of bonds of various kinds for the school fund. : The local wheat crop, from all reports, is far exceeding expectations this year. One county farm produced about 50 bushels of 61-pound wheat. The entire state of Kansas seems to be having one of its best years, as well. : The new woman’s public rest room was a popular place here over July 4 and the old court room on the second floor was thrown open and used as a dining room.”
