Suspect faces theft, burglary charges

Police arrested a 22-year-old man for attempted burglary and attempted theft Monday after a woman in the 4800 block of McCormick Street reported he tried to enter her home as she was inside getting dressed.

She said the man rang the doorbell multiple times, then went to the back of the home and tried to enter through a rear door after she didn’t answer.

Officers later found the man walking nearby, carrying a metal hammer in the pocket of his shorts.

His explanation for the hammer, Lawrence Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said, was that a friend had borrowed his shorts and must have put the hammer in the pocket before returning them. He also told officers he didn’t know where he lived because he just had moved to town.

Police talked with others in the neighborhood and found another person who said a man matching the suspect’s description rang his doorbell that morning. The man told police when he answered the door, the suspect told him he had the wrong home.

The suspect was identified on jail records as Jeffrey L. Heathington.
